One of the most interesting coastal towns in the region, Peniscola, is an ancient fortress town, with a history going back to the Phoenicians .Its ancient fortress, surrounded by the white walled buildings of the ‘old town’ stands magnificently on a rocky outcrop jutting out into the sea. The castle at Peniscola, built by the Knights Templar, its famous for being the base of the heretic Pope, Papa Luna, in the 15th Century and was the setting for the final scenes of the film El Cid.
The town and harbour areas near to the castle have been tastefully developed and provide shops, restaurants and the pleasant park area where the local weekly market is held.
You can have a really pleasant time wandering about the old town. Watch out for the touts outside the shops and restaurants.
