Well worth the breathtaking drive round mountain roads. Visiting Morella is like going back in time. The town is built on a rocky crag with a commanding view over the surrounding countryside. The impressive castle of Morella sits on the top of the hill, and the village is surrounded by an ancient wall. The structure of the existing castle was built by Arabs during the Moor occupation of Spain and throughout history, because of its strategic position, Morella Castle has experienced numerous battles. The castle has been destroyed and then rebuilt by Iberians, Romans, Arabs and Christians. Remains still exist from all these periods in History. The town offers a great selection of shops and a market. Other historical buildings worth a visit include the Arciprestal Church, the Royal Cloister, San Francisco Convent etc. The basilica of Santa Maria La Mayor is considered one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic church architecture, and features a stunning valued choir and carved stairway. The central street of Blasco de Algón is notable for the medieval arcades and has been the site of a Sunday market since the thirteenth century. The ruins of the old castle offer a wonderful vantage point to survey the labyrinth of narrow streets below. The main street (calle principal) in Morella is a lively area lined with small shops selling local produce at reasonable prices.
