Festivals

The vast majority of the towns and villages on the Costa del Azahar hold some kind of local festivities throughout the year, particularly in the months of July, August and September.

Alcossebre Carnival Carnival time arrives in February and it really is a spectacular sight. All those taking part arrive in fancy dress. The costumes and floats are truly magnificent, it takes the people of the town a year to prepare. Many are perched on the top of tractors and lorries denoting specific themes as they parade around the local streets. Music and dancing in the street continue well into the small hours of the night.
San Antonio. On the night before the celebrations begin an enormous fire, topped with a devil is burned in the town centre along with fireworks. Usually the local businesses pay for food and drink, a paella dish wider than a family car is prepared and food shared. The following day, many species of animals which have been ‘blessed’ are paraded through the streets by the childeren of the town.

Sant Pere de Verona. On April 29 the bachelors of the community are celebrated with dances and release of heifers into the streets. All the townspeople come out onto the street and take part in the festival.
San Juan. In the night of the longest day of the year (June 24) the bonfires are ignited and there are feasts and dancing on the beach late into the night.
Moors and Christians. In the last week of September there is the traditional parades of Moors and Christians. The story is re-enacted of two villages that follow the two religions.
Santa Lucía. On December 13 this saint is celebrated by a pilgrimage up to the hermitage.
